Angela Evelyn Bassett was born in America. Her work has been recognized for television and in film from the mid-80s onwards, she has received various accolades such as two Golden Globe Awards and sixteen NAACP Image Awards in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and seven Primetime Emmy Awards. Bassett comes from New York New York. Her home was Winston-Salem North Carolina. The mother of Bassett had divorced from her father at approximately five. She and her younger sister later moved into St. Petersburg Florida with their mother. Bassett saw James Earl Jones in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men play when she was in high school, and realised that it was acting she would like to be doing. The year was 1980 and Bassett completed her studies at Yale University New Haven Connecticut with an undergraduate degree in African American studies. She also received a degree from The Yale School of Drama. While at Yale she met Courtney B. Vance a fellow actor and the two got married in 1997.
